I used to have a lab that wouldn't get a ball that I threw. She'd be fetching the ball like it was her job if my son threw it, if my husband threw it, or if any of the dog park regulars threw it. I would take the ball, throw it, and she would just stare for a minute and wander off like "Meh, fetch is overrated."

If the issue is that he won’t let go, tell him to drop it and put a treat by his nose.

so my lab is 9 months old and will fetch in the house fine, but won't outside. is this something she might pick up. i would love to play with her outside but all she wants to do is sniff. Re: Lab puppy won't fetch! by labman63 » Thu Mar 14, 2013 8:58 am Heck I have a 16 week old that wouldn't pick up a thing until about a week ago.(I only got her a couple weeks ago) Still only one or two times then thats it. You kept his retrieving ball special, but your dog won’t even pick it up. Not once has he ever put the damn ball in his mouth. It isn’t fair! And before I ask, yes, you have tried other things, toys, socks, puppy dummies, you name it. He runs after anything you throw, and then runs right back again, WITHOUT it! Some dogs like the act of chasing the ball but won’t bring it back, which really ruins a good game of fetch. And some dogs don’t see the point of either chasing after a toy or bringing it back.

Start playing fetch. When your Labrador returns to you with the toy ask him to drop the toy. If he doesn't release the toy, pick up another toy until the first one is released. Then pick up the fetch toy and continue the game. Practice often until your Lab learns that releasing the fetch item results in continued game of fetch. Well, kind of. While we all know someone with an amazing dog who has always loved to go grab the newspaper off the street, most dogs don’t arrive on this planet with an instinctual understanding of the whole “go fetch that item and bring it back to a human nice and unchewed” thing. It’s a behavior we teach our dogs with varying degrees of success, largely depending on their motivation. Good day! I'm completely new to retriever training, and need some help getting my lab puppy to love retrieving a dummy. She is a chocolate labrador, American/field-type, whelped in early Dec 2013. So, she's about 9.5 weeks old at the time of this posting. We've had her since 49 days old. I want to get her to LOVE playing fetch while she's young, before it's too late. Help!
