I have a 11 week old husky puppy, and wow does she bite a lot and hard. I’ve noticed she bites my boyfriend a lot more (I am doing all the training with her so she probably sees me as dominant) but still it’s an issue. I will try this out, as yelping only made her bite harder. She thinks biting us is more exciting since we react to it.

My lab puppy bites hard. If one puppy bites another puppy too hard, the hurt pup will give a high pitched yelp and go a bit limp. The biting pup should immediately back off. If the biting pup persists with biting too hard, the one being bitten will refuse to play with the biter. My puppy is biting hard.. My black lab puppy just turned 9 weeks old today and I am experiencing pretty much the same thing you were experiencing. My puppy loves to play but most of the time we cannot even pet him because he bites our hands and arms every time we get close to him.. Also save special treats for training, my puppy loves. Unfortunately, most Lab owners will take this behavior and commonly label the dog as a “freak” to its breed. To do so is wrong. The Labrador Retriever is just doing what it was designed to do and it is the owner’s responsibility to teach it what is and is not acceptable behavior. All my husband does is speak firmly to her and she stops. I guess I just don't have daddy voice. I will say that the kids make it worse by screaming, laughing, and running when puppy bites them. And I'm sure puppy can sense my frustration, which probably also makes things worse.

Sabrina M. writes, “I have run into a problem with my puppy that I have not had before. My 11-week-old female is going into attack mode: growling, grabbing clothes, and biting legs. If one of them bites too hard, another puppy will yelp and likely bite back harder.... lesson learned!. It worked better than anything else to stop my VERY nippy GSD puppy from shredding my pants, shoes, hands, ankles etc. etc. For this you don't want to spray it into your pup's mouth/face and you don't even need to spray it in his direction. Hey, all - my White Lab puppy is about 6 months old (Not fixed yet, surgery scheduled for next month). About 2 or 3 times a day he will get a severe burst of energy and start aggressively jumping and biting and me and my wife, his bites are hard and sharp and often draw blood or leave bruises. When puppy A bites too hard and causes pain in puppy B, puppy B will cry out and refuse to continue to play with puppy A. Puppy B may even move away from puppy A. Through this interaction, puppy A learns that if he bites that hard, other puppies won’t play with him. So puppy A makes his play bites softer so they don’t provoke pain and cause.

If two pups are tussling, and one bites down too hard, the other puppy yelps loudly. This startling sound usually causes the offending party to let go. The play stops for a few minutes, as the first pup nurses his wounded ego. Play then resumes, but with less brutality. This also happens with the pup’s interaction with their mom. Labs are mouthy when they are pups. They are bred to use their mouths. I spent a few weeks wearing my lab pup hanging off my trouser leg. Have a look in the files on the facebook group 'Dog Training Advice and Support' for a article called 'Puppy Biting'. it gives detailed information on how to deal with it. Never hit a puppy that bites. And don’t bite back. Instead, when to stop puppy nipping, if your puppy gets too rough, stop playtime and walk away. Your puppy should quickly learn that you will ignore him if he misbehaves. If you’re struggling with this issue, avoid rough play. You also should skip play biting. Say No Without Punishing Your Labrador Puppy. Let your Labrador know that biting and nipping is not acceptable behavior. Say him no firmly but avoid punishing him. When your Lab bites you, pull your hand away and shout “no.” Then, walk away from your Lab and ignore him even when he runs after you.

A puppy or dog who hasn’t learned bite inhibition with people doesn’t recognize the sensitivity of human skin, and so he bites too hard, even in play. Some behaviorists and trainers believe that a dog who has learned to use his mouth gently when interacting with people will be less likely to bite hard and break skin if he ever bites someone. If the puppy chases after you, biting at your legs and feet, step over a baby gate, or pop him in his crate for a few minutes. You can read up on this process in more detail in this article: How to cope with biting. It is simply a case of ‘rinse and repeat’ until the puppy learns that hard bites are unacceptable. Allow Soft Bites. While dogs do need to learn when they're biting too hard, this shouldn't be done on your hand. They should learn this in other ways, like with a chew toy. Allowing your dog to wrap their teeth around your hand will only cause confusion. You're trying to get them to stop biting altogether. You want your puppy to have the greatest bite inhibition possible. Baby teeth are only in the mouth for a short time, and start falling out about 18 weeks of age, depending on the breed. Puppy bites are painful, but really only do superficial damage. Pups can get lots of feedback on how hard they are biting without doing serious harm.
